Later, as problems develop, they grow distant from their spouse, and love eventually turns to apathy, or even hate. Sometimes, one partner does not even know that the other is mentally disengaging from their union. Divorce follows, and with rare exceptions, a lifetime of problems typically ensues. 

The very sad truth is that this often happens to two people who at one time truly loved each other! Add children to the mix and you have a real tragedy for all involved.
