PART V - THE MAJOR ISSUES

Sports/Hobbies

Most sports and hobbies are intrinsically good. They provide diversion, relaxation, and often good exercise and camaraderie. Everyone needs to have an outlet from the struggles of everyday living.

Problems occur, however, when the activity takes over. Our lives need to be in balance. This means we need to have our priorities straight, especially if we are married and have obligations to others.

On the other extreme, some feel guilty about having a hobby. It is important to note that it can be just as taxing on a marriage for a spouse not to have an outlet. That spouse will undoubtedly have more stress and is likely to vent it on their loved ones.

Avoid comparing yourself with others. Bill may watch ten hours of football every Sunday, but his wife may love it too, or she may enjoy pursuing her own thing while he does his. In this case he’s not neglecting her. Every marriage has different circumstances. Couples need to communicate and work out an understanding regarding leisure activities.
