PART II - YOU (The Outside Influencers)

Madison Avenue

No one should be surprised that advertisers are motivated to sell their products. The problem is that many advertisers today do not just sell the features and benefits of their products, but they attempt to link their products to our perceptions of ourselves.  They want to create a need for their products that tells us that we will:

  1. Get more sex,

  2. Be more popular, and

  3. Have happier lives.

They do this by using celebrities, attractive people, and subtle and not so subtle messages that tell us that we will not be fulfilled without their products.

Often people go into large amounts of debt, or become resentful that they can not have the products. In either case, buying into the advertisers’ messages can be destructive.

How has Madison Avenue influenced your behaviors or attitudes?  How do you feel about what you’ve written? What impact do you see on your marriage?
