PART V - THE MAJOR ISSUES
Idiosyncrasies
Idiosyncrasy is defined by the Oxford American Dictionary as “a person’s own attitude of mind or way of behaving etc. that is unlike that of others”.
Nonconformity can be endearing, distressing, or a non-issue to a spouse. Again, communication and unselfishness are key.
If your husband likes to dress up like Davy Crockett and it bothers you, try to negotiate limits. For example, allow him to be Davy at home or when he is out with the boys, but normal dress when you visit your parents or go to Church.
If you are the one with unusual attitudes or habits, be sensitive to your spouse and work towards a compromise that makes everyone happy.
Some idiosyncrasies go beyond nonconformity and are really personality disorders that require professional counseling. These behaviors are usually rooted in the person’s fears or insecurities, so they require lots of help to change. For example, if someone is terrified to leave the house because of a fear of germs, that individual is incapable of compromise and needs professional help.
